Work in progress towards the second volume of the reference collection
Gibson / 1992 J-200
[Comment from the person in charge: Hoshino]
This model's origins date back to before the war.
It is known that in 1937, Gibson collaborated with Ray Whitley, a popular actor and singer in Western films, to develop this guitar. At the time, producing and releasing models based on popular movie actors was considered an effective way to promote new guitars. The ornate decorations and large body were likely designed to easily catch people's attention.
Since its release in 1938, it has been a favorite of numerous musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (Rolling Stones).
The guitar we are introducing here is a 1992 model from the Montana factory.
This 30-year-old veteran, with its checkered paintwork, exudes a very dignified and mature presence.
The sound, rather than the crisp tone of maple, has a low end and resonance reminiscent of a rosewood body.
This guitar, which also has a slight resemblance to a Martin dreadnought, is sure to be very useful in recording situations.
