Start Scout Percolator PROTOTYPE [Serial Number 1] - Deep Sun Red

Description:

Even in the wide and weird world of fuzz and distortion pedals the percolator stands out. Originally built in Wisconsin and popularized by a certain famous underground recording engineer in Chicago, the percolator is a truly midwestern freakazoid circuit. It conforms to none of the sonic standards set by pedals before it and nothing quite like it has been made since. By uniquely using both a PNP germanium and NPN silicon transistor together with a shared bias, the percolator is able amplify only even order harmonics. The resulting sound is an abrasive and cutting distortion/fuzz with a completely unique sonic character.

The Tazer Lag Effects Star Scout honors the character of original percolator while tweaking the circuit to be slightly more usable to my ear. Using an NOS germanium transistor sourced from eastern Europe the Star Scout maintains the half germanium half silicon design that makes it special while having color that is completely its own. Added tone switches totally change the range of the Star Scout and help it sit correctly in a variety of mixes and playing scenarios. From huge feedback inducing blasts of noise to thick and crunchy rhythm tones to solos on the edge of disintegration and beyond the Star Scout is a unique and useful option to have in the spectrum of distortion.

Controls:

GAIN -Red Knob

-This knob controls how hot of a signal you feed the Star Scout. Turning the knob to the right adds distortion and some compression

VOL -Silver Knob

-This knob controls the overall output level.

Unlabeled Tone Switches:

These two switches are hooked up to two different tone capacitors. These completely change the sounds of the Star Scout. Turning both off will achieve the brightest and most unrestrained sound possible from the circuit.

CLIP SWITCH

-Left for germanium clipping. Right for Silicon clipping.

-Please use a standard polarity center negative power supply.

-NEVER EXCEED 9 VOLTS

PLEASE NOTE: This pedal is a prototype and there are some inconsistencies with enclosure drilling/stamping and component selection among units. Aesthetic imperfections aside these are built to last and sound great despite being early units in Tazer Lag history.
