Martin / 1968 D-35
The D-35 was introduced in 1965 due to the depletion of rosewood, which had been used in Martin's representative models such as the Style-28 and Style-40.
By using a 3-piece rosewood back, it had the advantage of requiring less material area compared to a 2-piece back.
Later, it became a popular model alongside the D-28, used by artists such as Thom Yorke and Takuro Yoshida.
—3-piece rosewood back
The sides and back of the dreadnought-note body are adorned with quarter-sawn 3-piece rosewood.
Compared to the 2-piece back of the Style-28, it produces a softer resonance and a well-balanced, rich tone.
The top is made of spruce, and the multi-stripe binding gives the body a refined look.
The pickguard has been replaced with one without paint.
The fingerboard is made of ebony and features dot position markers.
Another difference from the D-28 is the binding on the sides of the fingerboard.
The neck is made of mahogany and features a soft V-shaped grip.
Combined with a 42mm nut width, it offers an optimal grip.
Also, a square truss rod is used, which is a significant feature of this period.
The ebony downbelly bridge is fitted with a short saddle.
The rosewood veneer headstock features a rounded shape, characteristic of the 1960s.
It also has a C.F. Martin classic logo decal.
The tuning machines are Grover 102s with a "PAT" stamp.
These tuners were used until around 1978.
Unlike the D-28, the D-35 boasts not only visual differences such as the back wood's appearance and the binding on the side of the fretboard, but also the unique, gentle, and resonant tone that is characteristic of the D-35.
If you're not satisfied with the D-28, please give it a try.
