An AP Audio patching system (often referred to as the AP Audio Master Patching System) is a 19-inch rackmount patch bay designed to organize and streamline signal routing between mixing consoles, outboard gear, and recording interfaces. These units typically provide 48 points (24 stereo or 44/48 mono channels) utilizing 1/4-inch TRS connectors, making them compatible with both balanced and unbalanced gear. How It Works and Key Features
- Modular Design: Many AP Audio units (which were famously built in Petaluma, California with Re'an components) feature individual, replaceable channel cards.
- No Soldering Required: Routing and normalization changes can be made by flipping or reorienting the internal printed circuit (PC) cards rather than soldering.
- Configurable Normaling: You can easily switch the modules between different operating modes:
- Normalled / Half-Normalled: The top row (usually the output of your source) flows directly into the bottom row (the input of your destination) without needing a patch cable. Inserting a cable breaks or taps into this default flow.
- De-normalled (Straight-through): Signals go straight in and straight out; there is no default connection between the top and bottom rows.
Why Hardware Patch Bays MatterA patch bay eliminates the need to constantly crawl behind your rack or desk to unplug and replug cables. Instead, you connect all the inputs and outputs of your synthesizers, preamps, compressors, and audio interfaces to the back of the patch bay. Then, you handle all routing changes conveniently from the front using short patch cables. Because AP Audio systems are generally out of production, they are mostly found on the used market. You can browse for them or compare listings on platforms like Reverb or eBay.
