This is a 1997 Martin D-18VM (the early version of the D-18V).  It’s in Very Good+/Excellent- condition.  I picked it up about a year ago, but I have since found a D-18 1939 Authentic, so this one isn’t getting much play.  This guitar has a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back, sides and neck.  The neck is solid (no wings) with the modified-V neck profile.  The nut width is the narrower 1 11/16th.  I swapped out the saddle and nut with unbleached bone as this guitar originally shipped with micarta.  The neck set is perfect and the saddle has plenty of height (see pics).  It will not need any work for many years.

The action is set at 5/64th bass side, 4/64ths treble side at the 12th fret with neck relief at ~.003.

This guitar had EVO frets when I got it, but they weren’t installed properly (way too high and not properly leveled) and they created a real metallic sound, so I had my luthier pull them and install the standard Martin frets.  Unfortunately, less than a month later I picked up my Authentic and this one has set in its case ever since.  There are the usual dings and dents one would see on a 28 year old guitar but no cracks or structural problems.  There are some marks on the pickguard. The only finish issue is a gouge on the back near the end pin.  You can see it in the last picture.

This a great flatpicking guitar and a surprisingly good fingerstyle guitar.  This guitar has a strong bass response, a present, but not overpowering mid-range, and a nice clear, clean treble side.  It has enough punch and cut to be heard in a bluegrass jam, but then it can turn on a dime and do some beautiful, quiet fingerpicking stuff. The Sitka top is a bit quieter than and Adirondack top, but, in my experience, the Sitka tends to have a sweeter, more accessible sound.

This is one of the most versatile instruments Martin has ever made and, since they were phased out in 2012, they are getting harder to find.

It’s a bit more expensive then some others out there, but you are getting some unbleached bone upgrades and brand new frets.

If you like D-18’s, this one is a beauty!!
