The Late 2013 Mac Pro (often referred to as the "trash can") was a radical, cylindrical workstation. The 12-core model featured a 2.7 GHz Intel Xeon E5 processor and robust upgradability for RAM and storage, making it a reliable and powerful legacy machine.
Key Features & Design
- Unified Thermal Core: All internal components are attached to a triangular aluminum core that dissipates heat upwards using a single, quiet fan.
- Extensive I/O: Features six Thunderbolt 2 ports, four USB 3.0 ports, one HDMI 1.4 port, and dual Gigabit Ethernet ports.
- Display Support: Supports up to three 5K displays or six Thunderbolt displays.
- Unlocking the Ring: A latch unlocks the aluminum outer enclosure, allowing it to slide off and grant easy access to the RAM and SSD for upgrades.
Operating System Support
While natively supported through macOS Monterey, this workstation can be patched to run newer macOS versions using open-source tools. Because it runs an x86 processor architecture, it can also seamlessly run Microsoft Windows via Boot Camp.
