The Boss BF-2 Flanger is a legendary, fully analog modulation pedal produced between 1980 and 2001. Known for its iconic purple chassis, it uses Bucket Brigade Device (BBD) circuitry (specifically the MN3207 chip) to deliver everything from subtle, warm chorus tones to dramatic, metallic "jet-plane" sweeps. It is highly regarded by musicians for its distinct analog warmth and has been famously used by artists like Prince, The Cure, and Justin Chancellor of Tool.
The Core Controls
The pedal features four highly interactive knobs that allow you to precisely sculpt your modulation:
- Manual: Adjusts the center delay time. Turning it clockwise shortens the delay for a more metallic texture; turning it counter-clockwise extends the delay toward chorus territory.
- Depth: Controls the width or amplitude of the sweep. Setting it to zero lets you use the Manual knob for a fixed, stationary filter matrix.
- Rate: Dictates the speed of the low-frequency oscillator (LFO) sweep.
- Resonance: Manages the amount of feedback fed back into the circuit. Cranking it accentuates the comb-filtering peaks, producing the aggressive, dramatic "whoosh" sound.
- Condition: Overall thi pedal is in Very good+ showing only minor player use. It has been tested and is fully function
Tonal VersatilityThough labeled a flanger, the BF-2 is widely celebrated for its ability to mimic other modulation effects depending on how you configure the knobs:
- Classic Flange: Set all controls to noon, then increase the Resonance knob to taste for a soaring jet effect.
- Lush Analog Chorus: Roll the Resonance completely down, set Depth low, and keep Manual low (which corresponds to a longer delay time).
- Pseudo Rotary / Vibe: Increase the Rate and Depth while keeping Resonance minimal to achieve a swirling, rotating speaker illusion
