The Boss DS-1 Distortion (Black Label) Made in Japan (MIJ) is one of the most iconic and highly sought-after vintage guitar effects pedals. Produced in Japan between 1978 and 1988, these vintage units are highly collectible and distinct from modern versions due to their unique internal circuitry and warmer, more dynamic analog clipping character.

Specifications & Tonal Identity

• The Famous Chip: These early Japanese pedals are built around the historic Toshiba TA7136AP preamplifier integrated circuit (IC). This original chip gives the pedal a richer, warmer, and less "fizzy" tone compared to post-1994 iterations.
• Control Layout: Features the classic 3-knob interface for Tone, Level, and Distortion. The innovative tone circuit cuts lows while boosting highs when turned clockwise, and vice versa.
• Power Requirement: Uses the vintage Boss ACA power specification (12V DC unregulated) rather than the modern 9V DC PSA standard. It requires a 9V battery or a proper ACA-compatible power source to sound its best.
