✨ Overview / Opening

This Leblanc Normandy 4 Bb clarinet serial number A19651 is one of the later generations of the French-made Normandy wood clarinet line produced within the Leblanc family ecosystem. Featuring the later “new logo” style with matching serial numbers on both main joints and logos present on all sections, this example represents the mature production era of the Normandy 4 series.

Designed as a student to intermediate-level French wood clarinet, the Normandy 4 offers traditional grenadilla wood construction, responsive French-style mechanism feel, and a more refined acoustic character than many basic entry-level student clarinets. Recently fully serviced and professionally restored, this instrument is ready to play.

🌳 Body & Condition

Constructed entirely from grenadilla wood, the body remains in very good condition with minimal signs of normal wear and tear, including light scratches, nicks, and cosmetic blemishes consistent with careful use. There are no cracks and no previous crack repairs present.

The bore measures approximately 14.9 mm (0.587"). Included is the original 66 mm barrel.

The bore and body have been cleaned and oiled inside and out. Matching logos are present on all sections, and serial numbers match on both primary body joints.

Compared to many basic student clarinets, the Normandy 4 reflects traditional Leblanc-family manufacturing concepts emphasizing responsive French-style action, moderate bore design, and practical long-term durability.

📚 Additional Notes

The Normandy 4 line was introduced during the later phases of the French-made Leblanc-family student/intermediate clarinet production period and continued through multiple production generations before eventually being phased out. This later-logo example reflects the more standardized and mechanically refined phase of Normandy 4 production.

Typical playing characteristics associated with the Normandy 4 include warm French tonal color, moderate resistance, focused tone center, stable intonation, responsive articulation, and smooth register transition. The moderate French-style bore philosophy produces a more centered and controlled response while maintaining tonal flexibility and liveliness.

Mechanically, later Normandy 4 clarinets adopted more refined and standardized production architecture with practical, durable, and technician-friendly construction intended for advancing students, school ensembles, community groups, and long-term practical use.

While not intended as a professional-level orchestral clarinet, properly restored examples such as this remain legitimate French-made wood clarinets capable of excellent performance in educational and ensemble settings.
