Pearl 3.5 X 14" Free Floating Shell Snare Drum 1st Gen 1983-1991. This is the first generation. I marked it "Excellent" condition because it is really in great shape for its age.
The brass shell is original to the drum, and says it's Made in Taiwan. The maple shell, that can be swapped in for the brass shell, is for sale as a separate listing. Contact me if you want to buy them together as a set.
The hoops are Pearl Super Hoops. I put the original die-cast hoops on another snare drum for a recording project - and then sold that drum. On this drum I like the tone of the Super Hoops much better. The sound is much more open and alive. The cast hoops made this drum sound a bit dull and choked to me.
The Evans "self-muffling" batter head along with the classic Ludwig snare head work with these hoops to give the drum a high, sharp "crack", without being too dead or choked-off sounding.
The design of the strainers enables you to set the "elevation" of the snares relative to the head, along the same lines as the Ludwig Super-Sensitive snare. I have one of those. It's more involved to get set up just right, but once I do, it sounds amazing. The same it true with this Pearl.
I've disassembled and cleaned everything, especially the strainers.
The drum has been a case queen ever since my recording projects ended, so it's time for it to get played again. I never gigged with this drum, but only recorded a couple of tunes with it.
Nothing else in the photos is for sale except the drum. The photos show the brass shell outside the drum so you can have another view of how the free-floating arrangement works.
As an aside: This size snare drum is often called a piccolo snare. Well, I was taking a drum masterclass/clinic with David Garibaldi , maybe around 2001. And I asked him a question about his "piccolo snare". He growled and almost swore, and informed me that since his was 14" and not 13", it was *NOT* a piccolo snare. Apparently he was tired of straightening people out on that point!
