This is a very interesting and increasingly uncommon intermediate wood Bundy clarinet manufactured by Selmer USA during the transitional period when the company was blending traditional wood construction with the newer Resonite components that would later dominate the student market. Serial number 118460 represents one of these unusual factory hybrid configurations, combining grenadilla wood body joints with original Resonite barrel and bell components intended to balance durability with the tonal advantages of wood construction.
🎶 This example has been fully serviced and plays with a huge, robust sound that is bright, powerful, and free-blowing. The instrument offers a noticeably broader tonal character and stronger low register response than many later student clarinets, making it an excellent step-up option for advancing players looking for a wood clarinet with strong projection and substantial tonal presence.
Body & Condition
The upper and lower joints are constructed from stained grenadilla wood, while the original barrel and bell are Resonite. This practical hybrid configuration was designed to reduce cracking and swelling issues in the most vulnerable areas of the instrument while retaining the tonal benefits of a wood body.
The original barrel measures 66.5 mm. The bore has been oiled inside and out. All joints feature metal tenon caps, a construction detail generally associated with higher-quality instruments and intended to reinforce the tenon areas against cracking and wear.
Structurally, the clarinet is in very good condition with no cracks and no signs of previous crack repair. There is some visible staining wear to the finish that can mainly be seen close up. Due to age and normal use, there are scratches, nicks, and cosmetic blemishes present throughout the instrument, though all are cosmetic only and do not affect playability.
These earlier wood-body Bundy clarinets are known for their relatively open playing characteristics, broad sound profile, and strong chalumeau response compared to later fully plastic student models. They occupy an interesting place historically within the Selmer USA lineup and remain underrated players when properly serviced.

Additional Notes
The wood-body Bundy clarinets fitted with Resonite barrel and bell components represent a transitional Selmer USA design philosophy from the period following the introduction of Resonite in the late 1940s. These instruments were intentionally configured to combine the tonal qualities of grenadilla wood body sections with the increased durability and reduced maintenance concerns of molded synthetic components.
🎵 The barrel and bell are among the most crack-prone areas on many clarinets, particularly in school and student-use environments. By incorporating Resonite components in these sections, Selmer USA reduced warranty issues and improved durability while still maintaining much of the tonal character associated with wood-body instruments.
Many of these earlier wood Bundy clarinets feature relatively open bore characteristics and a more free-blowing response compared to later compressed student clarinet designs. When properly set up, they can offer broad tonal spread, strong throat tones, solid projection, and surprisingly substantial playing characteristics for an intermediate-level instrument.
