RARE! 1968 Gibson ES-335TD Custom Colour Factory Black w/OHSC & Paperwork
We’re fortunate enough to have plenty of special guitars pass through the shop, but every once in a while something truly special comes along—and this one may have just topped the lot!
Introducing this all-original 1968 Gibson ES-335TD in a custom ordered Factory Black.
Black might seem like a common finish found on an ES-335 today, but during the late ’50s and throughout the ’60s it was an incredibly rare sight, available only as a custom-order finish on this platform.
This is only the second Factory Black ’68 example in standard ES-335TD format that I've seen surface on the used market in recent memory. There are a couple of special-order stereo Varitone models currently sitting with dealers in the US—but let’s be honest, this is the specification everyone really wants!
And just check the orange label: “ES-335TD BLACK.” So cool.
We acquired this guitar from a dealer in Louisville, Colorado, who was selling it on behalf of the original owner’s estate. The original owner, Silvia, would have custom ordered this from Gibson around 1967.
The guitar also retains its original case, along with the original adjustable Tune-O-Matic bridge instructions and schematics.
Condition-wise, the guitar is in exceptionally well-preserved overall condition, showing only light age-related wear consistent with careful use over its 60+ year lifespan. It has clearly been lovingly maintained and treasured throughout the years. Under blacklight inspection, the guitar checks out completely original, with no signs of breaks, cracks, or repairs. As noted, it remains entirely original, including its 22 smaller vintage frets, which still have plenty of life and playability remaining.
The all-original electronics operate flawlessly, and the original PAT No. pickups deliver a warm, mellow, creamy, and woody tone.
To summarise, this is arguably one of the last Golden-era ES-335s — featuring the coveted orange label and one-piece neck — finished in an exceptionally rare, custom-ordered Factory Black. A true once-in-a-lifetime guitar!
