Thanks to Jake Wildwood for this info!!!
"This Alembic-ized take on a P-Bass was made by Moridaira in Japan -- a company which is best known for its Morris-branded gear in the UK. This through-neck beast sat at the top of the line in the late '70s early '80s and it's a giant step-up from the more pedestrian (and common) student-grade Korean P-Bass copies. This thing feels professional! It's a through-neck design and its "central core" is a 5-piece mash-up of maple and cherry with body "wings" of Ash. The fretboard is ebony and all the hardware (which is good-quality and rugged) is original. Truss-rod access is at the end of the fretboard and the neck feels like a mix of P-Bass and J-Bass profiles. The neck has a medium C-shaped rear profile."
I personally agree with everything Jake said above, except I'd add that it feels like a mix of a P-bass and a J-bass profiles that is a bit skinnier width wise than either.
This bass cost $789 in 1978, that is $4100 in today's money! No wonder they are so rare! Crazy!!!
I have been lucky enough to own 2 Morris electric guitars and one bass, I mentioned the color of the tinted Ash in the title, it is a totally different color than Matsumoku, or other Japanese guitars, the Morris guitars have this really neat peachy, brown, almost iridescent quality to it in some light, it is truly unique.
This bass has a unique 33 1/2 scale, and a tight fret board radius. I don't have anything small enough to measure the radius, but I estimate it to be between a 7.5" to 8.5". If you like skinny necks with a round radius, you will love this thing! It's super easy to move around on! It slaps great too!
Im sure most of you notice the odd pick up spacing on this thing, I was so curious about what it would sound like, I have always had a preference for the neck pick up, and I can tell you for me, this bass has me torn between neck, bridge, or both! Lol it is a bit different, but kind of hard to explain. I guess the pick ups might seem more even to each other than normal if that makes sense.
Its in excellent condition and plays great! It has a small ding on the front of the body near the bottom, you have to search for it to see it, and there is a finish crack near the input jack, other than that it's perfect. The pick ups are original , they are DiMarzio's, and they have a nice clean sound to them with a little bit of beef! This is the only string through version I can find of these. My luthier hand made the bridge on this bass in 1983, it is actually a solid chunk of stainless steel with nice big brass saddles. It has been fully gone through by him as well, all electronics checked, cleaned, oiled, and new 40 through 100 Ernie Ball strings with nice medium action. He is ready for his new owner!
