Oliver Archut Telefunken V672 Dual Channel Preamp

I took these out of a console in 2007 and had Oliver rack them up in 2008.

The Telefunken V672 is a historic, solid-state universal vintage amplifier module originally built by TAB and Telefunken as a successor to the legendary V72 tube preamps. The late Oliver Archut, a renowned German-born audio engineer and founder of TAB-Funkenwerk, was globally recognized as one of the foremost experts on modifying, repairing, and racking these European vintage cassette modules. Because the original V672 modules were factory-configured as fixed-gain distribution, line, or summing amplifiers, Archut specialized in redesigning the internal feedback circuitry and transformer configurations to safely convert them into high-gain, premium microphone preamplifiers.

From a smoke-free studio that takes excellent care of its equipment.

  • Premium Transformers: Features high-quality, dual-isolated custom transformers on both the input and output stages, which impart a massive analog footprint.
  • Sonic Character: Delivers a highly punchy, clear mid-range focus with a massive, warm low-end weight often compared favorably against premium Neve and API designs.
  • Outputs: 4 x Line Outputs per Channel. Oliver explained that, because all the outputs were on the units when they were in the console ( to be bused to up to 4 places at once), he wanted to utilize them. This is a unique feature of Oliver's design.
  • Phase Switches: Each output (8 outputs) includes a phase switch to reverse 180 degrees as desired.
  • The Mic/Line switch acts more as a pad than a traditional Mic/Line switch. It doesn't toggle inputs; in line, it attenuates the input. I usually use it in "Line" for higher output mics like 87s and 414s (particularly on loud sources), and in "Mic" for lower output mics like 121s and SM7s or quiet sources.
  • One note: These sound amazing when the gain structure is understood. For modern digital recording, if you want to track with peaks above about -15dBfs, you should use a line amp to make up the gain before your interface. E.g., a console, a compressor (one of my favorite line amps is in the Distressor), etc. If you try to get it to output more than it inherently can, like any analog gear, it will over-modulate. In this case, it is a solid-state sounding distortion.
