Ampex MM1100 1” 8 track Reel to Reel

Up for sale is an Ampex MM1100 1” 8 track machine. I recently had this listed, but decided to give it another think and ultimately I just don’t have the time to get this up and running. These are wonderful sounding reel to reel machines when they are running correctly. If you know, you know!

Here’s the history:

I bought it off a local tech in LA who was using it as his backup machine. He went through all the channel cards and power supply to make sure it was up to speed. This was in late 2025. In 2026, I moved into a smaller space and didn’t have a lot of room / need for the machine. I’ve gone through and tried to align the transport as best I could after the move. Please see video. Jacob Horowitz (LA tech) has recently checked out the machine. He recapped a few “leaky” caps in the transport card, but believes some of the IC chips in the other transport card (shown in pictures) might need to be replaced to get this fully up to speed. He believed the 1” head stack to be barely touched with 85-90% head life (see pictures).

Channels all engage in Input monitoring. 2 VUs are burned out but can easily be replaced.

Comes with extra cables, manual, take-up reel, and 2 reels of used 1” tape.

I have since removed it from my console patch. It’s in a well kept studio in Pasadena, CA waiting for pickup.

It’s listed at this price because it will need a final push to get it up to speed. If you have a tech that you want me to speak to regarding this machine, please send him the history as I have nothing more to add. I'm hoping this goes to a good home with someone that can get it sailing.
