This is a 1982 Gibson Explorer in Ebony, that we acquired from original owner who purchased it brand new while in high school. Most Explorer’s from this era are usually really beat up with a bunch of finish checking, modifications, neck repairs, or and have a lot wear. This Explorer is none of these because it’s lived the majority of its life in its original Gibson Hardcase, and it’s in excellent overall condition with very little signs of wear, especially for a 44 year old guitar (See Photos). Right after it was purchased by the original owner, it had a bad bridge pot, and it was replaced by the Gibson dealer. Other than that, it’s all original and has barely been played (See Photos). The entire guitar is in excellent condition and the owner stated that it lived in it‘s case and was only played a handful of times since it was purchased. There’s no signs of play wear on the pickguard, frets or fretboard (See Photos). The bridge volume pot also has a little wiggle when you spin it, but it works perfectly. Being that it’s a black guitar, there’s the normal light surface scratches, and there’s a small pencil tip size nick on the top right side of the headstock and a few small nicks on the back by the control cavity cover (See Photos).
This Explorer was produced during a transitional period for Gibson when they were winding down production in Kalamazoo, and ramping up production in Nashville. During this time period they were making Explorers at both factories, and this particular Explorer was produced in Nashville, on November 5th 1982, and is where Gibson still produces guitars to this day. This one also features the original Brown with pink plush lined case, with pink shroud that was introduced in early 80’s, and only came with models produced in Nashville. The cases from the Kalamazoo made Explorers are the older 70’s style case which features a black exterior with a red plush interior.
The only thing that this guitar needed when we got it was a full setup with new D’Addario EXL110 10-46 strings. It plays and sounds amazing with nice low action. The neck is straight, the frets are level, and truss rod has plenty of room for adjustment (See Photos).
