This guitar is in very good condition for it's age. Based on the serial number, this guitar was made between 1969-1970. The pictures show wear and tear as expected for a vintage guitar. The bridge of the guitar was removed and re-glued to fix some separation.
The guitar has been detailed and has brand new D'Addario strings. It includes what appears to be an original case, which is in Fair shape.
The Yamaha FG-230 Nippon Gakki is a vintage 12-string acoustic guitar produced in Japan between 1968 and 1972, featuring the iconic "Red Label". Known as a "jumbo dreadnought," this spruce-top, mahogany-backed instrument is famous for its rich, resonant sound and durable construction, making it highly regarded by collectors and folk players.
Key Characteristics & Features
- Origin: Made in Japan by Nippon Gakki (pre-1987 corporate name).
- Label: Red label found inside the soundhole, often with "Nippon Gakki" and "Made in Japan" text.
- Construction: Dreadnought body, typically with a spruce top and mahogany back/sides.
- Headstock: Features the tapered headstock shape (unlike the wider FG-180) with the tuning fork logo on the truss rod cover.
- Sound: Known for a warm, "shimmering" 12-string chorus effect
The FG-230 is frequently cited in the context of the early, high-quality Japanese-made Yamahas (sometimes called "red label era"), which are known forpunching above their weight in terms of tone and quality.
