This is a mid-1970s Elk fuzz pedal, a later design version released as a copy of the EHX BIG MUFF!
It imitates the first model of the original BIG MUFF-π. Besides this "BIG MUFF SUSTAIN'A'R" lettering, there are also units with "BIG MUFF SUSTAIN'E'R" lettering. This particular unit is from after the model name was changed to "SUPER FUZZ SUSTAINAR," possibly due to problems with the original naming. While some units bear the brand names "ELK GAKKI CO.," "ELECTRO SOUND CO.," or are unbranded (no branding), this unit is labeled "ELK INCORPORATED." We've carried many ELK fuzz pedals in the past, and while the sound varied considerably from unit to unit, this particular pedal's sound is similar to the "BIG MUFF SUSTAINER" era, with less harshness, sufficient volume and thickness, and a distortion with rich sustain. The tone control is a standard high-cut type. This unit uses a 2SA733 transistor, but we've also seen 2SC829, 2SA495, and 2SA564 transistors. The resistors also varied, with some using standard metal film types and others carbon composition types. This is truly one of Japan's finest fuzz pedals. While the global market price has risen, we highly recommend everyone experience its raw power and impact.

*One knob is cracked, one set screw and knob have been replaced, and there are tape marks on the front side.
