Akai X-1800SD "Cross Field Super Deluxe" — Akai's flagship multi-format
deck of 1969-1971. **Three modes in one chassis:**
- 4-track stereo/mono reel-to-reel (7-1/2 and 3-3/4 IPS, 7" reels)
- 8-track stereo cartridge play + record
- Direct **reel-to-cartridge transfer** — copy your reel albums to 8-track
for car / portable playback without an intermediate machine
**Crossfield head technology** — Akai's premium ferrite head design with
a separate bias head crossed in front of the record/playback head.
Significantly extended high-frequency response over conventional decks
of the era, and the Crossfield badge is a meaningful spec for vintage
collectors. Confirmed on the model plate.
The X-1800SD is uncommon. Akai built very few combo decks like this —
most of the era was either reel-only or 8-track-only. Working examples
don't come up often, which makes this listing one of the better
foundations for someone who wants this exact format and is willing to
do a small amount of service to get there.
**Sold AS-IS as a tech-special. Read this before bidding.**
**What works (verified on the bench):**
- Powers on, no smoke or odor
- Both VU meters light and respond
- Reel-side **playback works on both channels** — confirmed audible
through the line outputs
- Fast-forward and rewind work cleanly — these use independent reel
motors, separate from the capstan, and they're solid
- All transport buttons engage; every switch and knob is present and
intact (Cross Field stereo selector, EQ, Volume L/R, Tone L/R,
Cartridge Program 1-4 selectors, Mode selector, Mic L/R inputs,
Power, Automatic on/off — all there, all clean)
- No tape or removable reels are included; reels shown in photos are for display/reference only
- 110V/220V voltage selector intact on rear panel — international buyers
can use this as-is on 220V mains
- Internal speakers present in the side panels (output works through
the rear-panel speaker terminals; not separately verified through
the internal pair)
**What's wrong:**
- **Capstan speed is unstable.** When cold, the deck plays at the correct
speed. As it warms up over a few minutes of running, capstan speed
slows progressively — sometimes WAY down, well below the rated 7-1/2 IPS.
- **High/low speed switch is largely ineffective.** Switching between 7-1/2
and 3-3/4 produces only a small audible change in pitch instead of the
expected ~2x.
- Both symptoms point to the **capstan drive belt** being stretched, glazed,
or oily — a classic 50+ year-old rubber failure. Cold = barely-enough
grip; warm = grip drops further, capstan slips, speed crashes. Speed
switch is mechanically correct but the slipping belt masks the pulley shift.
- This is among the most common failures on this generation of Japanese tape
deck and is **routinely fixable for $15-25 in belt parts plus 30-45 min
of service work**, IF you're set up to dig into a buried-internals deck.
**What was NOT done:**
- No belt replacement. The internals on the X-1800SD are densely packed —
electronics in the back are difficult to access, and a proper service
pass requires more disassembly than I'm willing to take on for this
unit. I'm passing that work along at a price that reflects it.
- No head alignment, no lube, no calibration tape pass.
- 8-track cartridge section was not tested.
**What this listing IS:**
A working reel-to-reel signal path — proven both channels, FF and rewind
solid — with a known, isolated, well-documented service item (capstan
belt). For a tech who restores Akai units this is roughly a half-day
to a working/serviced X-1800SD that comps at $400-550.
**What this listing is NOT:**
A working deck out of the box. Expect to do the belt service before this
plays at correct, stable speed. Do not buy if you're not comfortable
opening up an Akai of this era.
**Cosmetics:** Notably clean for the era. Walnut wood cabinet shows
honest age-appropriate surface marks but no major damage. Brushed
aluminum/champagne front panel is intact, all label printing legible.
Model plates on the back are pristine and clearly readable. Both
reels are clear plastic and clean. See photos for accurate representation
— what you see is what you get.
**Pricing context:**
Working/serviced X-1800SDs: $350-550 on Reverb and eBay.
Pure parts / fully-dead units: $55-150.
This unit at $245 sits between those because the signal path is proven and
isolated to a single common service item, but the capstan belt is failing
and the buyer is doing that work.
**Local pickup welcome in Nashville, TN — free.** Saves you the $85 shipping.
Heavy unit, packed securely for shipping with head area and transport protected.

A note about vintage/used electronics:
All electronics are tested. Any known issues are listed in the description above. Your item will not be sent DOA unless explicitly specified.
Sometimes issues do arise in transit and can be caused by rough handling, old/brittle wiring, or a component failing under the rigors of shipping. Major issues are covered by insurance — that's why every package ships fully insured.
Many issues are minor and fall under normal user maintenance. These are things any buyer of vintage/used electronics should be comfortable handling:
- Pots can be scratchy or develop a flat spot from use. DeoxIT solves most of these.
- Switches occasionally need to be cleaned or adjusted to make better contact.
- Belts, lubricants, and rubber components have a service life — vintage gear may need preventive service.
