Founded in the late 90's by Joe Naylor, Reverend guitars has established themselves as a high-quality instrument for enthusiasts and pros alike. With their own distinctive shapes, pickups and controls, Reverend guitars are not just clones but unique designs that stand on their own merits.
The Reverend Sensei H90 is a lightweight double cutaway guitar with a versatile pickup arrangement featuring their own Steelhead pickups. For everything from Blues to Pop and Hard Rock the Sensei H90 gives versatility a fresh new look.
The Sensei continues Reverend's reputation for a very high level of fit and finish and this extends to their 3-piece set Korina neck with bound Ebony fretboard. The neatly finished neck has Reverend's Medium Oval profile that typically runs .830-.850" at the 1st fret and .910-.930" at the 12th. Fret work is very clean and even, and the locking tuners are a bonus.
The Steelhead pickups are a recent innovation that as their name suggests feature large steel pole pieces. The noiseless P90-style model incorporates a "sidewinder" design, which uses two opposing coils positioned opposite the pole pieces. While this design lacks the raw, loose character of classic vintage P90s, it still delivers the punchy, clean definition typical of a quality P90, along with quiet operation. The Steelhead humbucker combines Alnico V and ceramic magnets, offering a rich blend of Alnico's warmth and ceramic's clarity, attack and touch sensitivity. Both pickups interact well with pedals, providing plenty of sparkle, complexity, and sensitivity to your picking.
Along the typical volume and tone control, the Reverend bass contour control is a standout feature. While inspection reveals that it's just a simple high pass filter the results are shockingly good. It's gradual, musical and rolling off low end never feels as though the sound is getting "weaker" just leaner and more defined. Used with the humbucker pickup it's leagues better than any coil split, and with the P90 a little contour roll-off gives the P90 more of an old-school feel. For our own taste we not sure we'd ever have this control wide open. The internal wiring is tidy, using full-size Alpha pots, film capacitors, and shielding paint.
While the Sensei may evoke the classic silhouette of double cutaway guitars, it is distinguished by Reverend’s unique design touches and excellent build quality. Combined with the new Steelhead pickups and smart controls it offers performance and style that sets it apart from other guitars.
