Sony TC-377 stereo reel-to-reel tape deck. 3-head, 3-motor, 4-track, 7" reel.
Solid-state, 7-1/2 and 3-3/4 IPS, separate erase/record/playback heads.
**Ferrite & Ferrite head stack** — the harder, longer-wearing version of the
TC-37x family that significantly outlasts the early permalloy heads. Confirmed
on the badge below the transport.
1972-1976 production — Sony's mid-tier semi-pro deck of the era, slotted
between the consumer TC-366 and the higher-end TC-378.
**Sold AS-IS as a tech/restorer project. Read this before bidding.**
**What works (verified on the bench):**
- Powers on, no smoke or odor
- Both VU meters light and respond
- Signal path is intact — confirmed audible playback through both channel
faders on a test tape before disassembly was attempted
**What does NOT work:**
- **Transport is dead.** During testing, rewind worked, fast-forward worked
intermittently, play was non-functional. After a partial disassembly attempt
to access the mode switches, no transport function engages at all. The
underlying issue is most likely dirty mode-switch contacts and/or a
hardened idler tire / capstan belt — common 50-year-old TC-37x failures —
but it has not been confirmed and no service has been performed.
- **Left-channel monitor source switch is broken.** Mechanical fault in the
switch itself. Likely revivable with DeoxIT and contact exercise, but again
not attempted.
- **Head-section cover is missing.** The smoked-plastic shield over the
head/capstan area is gone. Heads themselves are present and visually intact.
Replacements occasionally show up on eBay from TC-355/366/377 parts decks.
**What this listing IS:**
A solid foundation for someone who restores these for a living. The signal
path is proven good — that's the expensive part to verify on a fully-dead
unit. Whoever buys this is not gambling on whether the audio circuitry is
salvageable; they're buying a known-good signal path with a transport that
needs cleaning, lubrication, and switch service.
**What this listing is NOT:**
A working deck. Do not buy this expecting to plug in and play. Do not buy
this if you don't service vintage Sony tape decks. Working/serviced TC-377s
routinely sell for $300-450; if that's what you want, please buy one of those.
**Cosmetics:** Honest age-appropriate condition. See photos for accurate
representation — what you see is what you get. No reels included.
**Pricing context:**
Working/tested TC-377s: $200-450 on Reverb and eBay.
Pure parts / fully-dead units: $50-100.
This unit is priced between those because the signal path is proven, but
the buyer is taking on transport service work and a missing cover.
**Local pickup welcome in Nashville, TN — free.** Saves you the $75
shipping. Heavy unit (~25 lbs), packed securely for shipping with head area and transport protected.

A note about vintage/used electronics:
All electronics are tested. Any known issues are listed in the description above. Your item will not be sent DOA unless explicitly specified.
Sometimes issues do arise in transit and can be caused by rough handling, old/brittle wiring, or a component failing under the rigors of shipping. Major issues are covered by insurance — that's why every package ships fully insured.
Many issues are minor and fall under normal user maintenance. These are things any buyer of vintage/used electronics should be comfortable handling:
- Pots can be scratchy or develop a flat spot from use. DeoxIT solves most of these.
- Switches occasionally need to be cleaned or adjusted to make better contact.
- Belts, lubricants, and rubber components have a service life — vintage gear may need preventive service.
