The Gibson Firebird Platypus is a modern rework of one of the most visually and sonically distinctive designs in electric guitar history, paying tribute to the rare 1965 transitional “non-reverse” era. This used example carries that same unapologetic silhouette, with its flat Platypus-style headstock and streamlined proportions giving it a slightly more grounded, modern feel compared to the earlier reverse-body Firebirds. The Ebony finish keeps things understated and aggressive, letting the unique shape and hardware do all the talking while still retaining that unmistakable Gibson presence.
Built from a mahogany body with a glued-in set neck, it preserves the Firebird’s long, resonant sustain while refining the construction into a more traditional Gibson feel rather than full neck-through design. The SlimTaper mahogany neck keeps things fast and familiar, and the rosewood fingerboard with medium jumbo frets makes bending, sliding, and lead work feel smooth and controlled. The Platypus headstock design also improves string alignment for better tuning stability, paired with Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners and a solid Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge with Stop Bar tailpiece anchoring everything firmly in place.
The dual Firebird mini humbuckers are the heart of its personality; bright, articulate, and slightly compressed in a way that helps every note cut cleanly through a mix. Clean tones carry a bell-like ring with more clarity than a traditional humbucker, while driven sounds stay focused, punchy, and expressive without becoming muddy. With individual volume and tone controls and a straightforward 3-way toggle, it offers a wide but intuitive range of usable voices. Available as a used instrument at Haggerty’s Music, this Firebird Platypus blends vintage-inspired design with modern refinement, making it a standout for players who want something familiar yet unmistakably different.
