The Gibson Custom Shop 1958 Historic Collection 70th Anniversary Les Paul in Iced Tea Burst is a faithful recreation of one of the most important years in electric guitar history, built to reflect the feel, look, and response of the earliest “burst” era instruments. The Iced Tea Burst finish sits in a warm amber-to-brown gradient, allowing the subtle grain of the two-piece maple top to breathe through the gloss surface. It has that unmistakable late-’50s visual depth—neither overly flashy nor overly faded—just a natural, vintage-correct glow that shifts under light like a well-preserved original.
At its core, the construction follows the Historic Collection philosophy: a one-piece lightweight mahogany body paired with a hide glue-fitted maple top, designed to maximize resonance and authenticity. The binding is understated and period-accurate, while the gloss finish is intentionally restrained to mirror the character of aged nitrocellulose lacquer. Every detail in the body design prioritizes vibration, openness, and the slightly “looser” acoustic feel that early Les Pauls are known for, giving the instrument a more organic response than modern counterparts.
The neck is where the ’58 personality really comes through, with a chunky C-shaped mahogany profile that fills the hand and encourages a strong, anchored playing style. Its deeper first- and twelfth-fret measurements reflect the substantial late-’50s carve, while the Indian rosewood fingerboard and narrow frets maintain a smooth, controlled feel under the fingers. Combined with vintage-correct construction details like hide glue joints and a nylon nut, the neck feels intentionally old-school—substantial, resonant, and deeply connected to the body.
Tonally, the unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups deliver a highly dynamic, open voice with a strong sense of air and harmonic complexity. The neck pickup is warm and vocal with blooming sustain, while the bridge pickup has bite and clarity without becoming overly compressed or aggressive. With CTS potentiometers, paper-in-oil capacitors, and a traditional control layout, the guitar responds directly to subtle changes in picking dynamics and volume adjustments. Available at Haggerty’s Music, this 70th Anniversary ’58 Historic Les Paul stands as a true Custom Shop tribute to the earliest era of the burst—raw, resonant, and historically focused in both feel and tone.
