I’ve handled quite a few Les Pauls over the years—Standards, Studios, Classics—but every once in a while one comes through that just hits a little different. This particular one has that feel.

This is a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Player Plus in Wine Red Vintage, and it’s one of those underrated models that quietly packs a ton of character. Right away, the top grabs you—the flamed maple under that satin finish has a depth to it that shifts in the light, giving it a more organic, almost raw look compared to the typical gloss Les Paul. It feels less “polished showroom” and more “player’s guitar with personality.”

In hand, this one is seriously dialed. The neck has that comfortable modern feel—substantial enough to feel like a real Les Paul, but fast and easy to move on. This particular one is set up incredibly well—low action, smooth response, and frets that feel broken-in in the best way. It’s one of those guitars where you pick it up and instantly start playing longer than you meant to.

Tone-wise, this is where the Deluxe really separates itself. The mini humbuckers have a unique voice—tighter low end, more focused mids, and a brighter, punchier top compared to full-size humbuckers. They cut through a mix beautifully while still retaining that unmistakable Gibson warmth. Clean, they’re articulate and snappy. Pushed, they absolutely scream—perfect for classic rock, blues, and anything that needs clarity with bite.

Condition is excellent overall. It’s been played, but well cared for—just light signs of wear here and there, with the most notable being some hanger marks. Nothing that takes away from how this guitar presents—it still looks fantastic and has that lightly broken-in vibe players actually want.

Those covers were typically included to keep the case from scuffing during storage or transport, and most people toss them—so it’s a cool little extra that adds to the overall completeness of the package.

If you’ve never spent time with a Deluxe, this is a great example of why they’ve got such a loyal following. It’s still unmistakably a Les Paul—but with a little more edge, a little more clarity, and a feel that makes it hard to put down.
