Burstbuckers come in a variety of different voices, but you’ll most commonly see three different variations: Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. Each of these pickups is voiced in the same fashion, but as the numbers go up, so does the power, allowing guitarists of all styles to enjoy the vintage-style tone of a Burstbucker at their preferred output levels. Type 1 is the closest to a vintage original, sporting an underwound design that’s perfect for blues, light rock, and clean tones. Type 3 is ideal for players looking to take their tone up a notch and drive their tube amp into the sweet spot, while Type 2 lies somewhere in the middle. Best of all, the different range of outputs allows you to tailor the tone of your neck and bridge positions — an option not possible with vintage-style PAFs, where both pickups are essentially identical!
