The Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 H fretless in Translucent Teal from the 1990s–2000s carries that unmistakable StingRay identity, built around an ash body that lets the grain show through the gloss finish. It’s a right-handed solidbody StingRay in its most classic form; bold, direct, and unapologetically alive under the fingers. The translucent teal finish adds a deep, almost liquid character to the ash, shifting slightly as the light hits it, which gives the instrument a more expressive visual presence than its straightforward spec sheet might suggest.

At the heart of it is the signature Music Man humbucker in the bridge position, pushing that familiar StingRay voice: focused low end, tight punch, and a naturally forward midrange that still holds clarity in fretless territory. The maple neck with a satin finish and moderate C shape keeps the feel familiar and fast, while the 34” scale strikes a balance between modern playability and comfort. The pau ferro fretless fingerboard, paired with fret markers and side dots, gives just enough visual reference without interrupting the smooth, uninterrupted glide that defines the instrument’s voice.

Electronics are the early-2000s-style 3-band active EQ: volume, treble, midrange, and bass giving far more control than the earlier 2-band versions. That mid control is especially important on fretless, letting you dial in a variety of tones from woody upright-style warmth to a brightness that sits right at the front of a mix. With chrome hardware, a 4-saddle bridge, and that no-nonsense StingRay layout, this bass is built to feel immediate and responsive, with the kind of shaping power that makes it equally at home in tight studio lines or expressive, melodic fretless playing.
