Here we have an almost 30 year old acoustic bass that was kept in the back room of Port Huron, Michigan music store most of it's life. I do not have the exact details but my customer of 45 years, a bassist like me, brought it in out of his collection on a trade deal. So we can say this instrument is a 1 owner uncirculated instrument. We also can say it is unplayed and in like new condition.
I rarely ever call an instrument mint. Mint is new out of the box. This bass is new out of the original hard case with all the factory tags as seen in picture. The bass has the Epiphone V Shadow parametric pre-amp which accepts Low or Hi z inputs.
I am going to say the only non original thing on the bass are the black nylon tape strings. So the music store or it's first and only owner decided to install the tape wound strings for tone change. Either way the bass shows absolutely no signs of wear.
A stunning example of this early version Epiphone acoustic-electric bass.
Here is the breakdown of the 1997 El Capitan string situation:
- Factory Standard: The 1997 El Capitan (model EBEC) was designed for punchy acoustic sound, usually featuring phosphor-bronze strings.
- Aftermarket Popularity: Owners frequently swap to black nylon tapewounds (like LaBella 750C or Rotosound Tru-Basses) to get a deeper, upright-bass "thump" and reduce finger noise.
- Recommendation: If your 1997 model has them, they were almost certainly installed by a previous owner seeking that upright, mellow tone. Tapewounds are still an excellent choice for this bass if you prefer a warmer sound, but they were not standard equipment in 1997

Based on the serial number S-97090020 this 1997 Epiphone El Capitan acoustic-electric bass was manufactured at the Samick plant in Korea.
Unlike the modern short-scale reissues (which feature a 30.5" scale), this specific 1997 model is a traditional full-scale (34") acoustic bass with a large, single-cutaway jumbo body.

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently in the last few months a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!
Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!
We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
