Here is a pristine Asian market Fender Traditional 70's Mustang that was available in Japan, Australia and other Pacific countries in the mid-90's. The Mustang was first introduced around 1964 as a premium version of the Musicmaster and Duo Sonic. While fancier than other so-called student models the Mustang was still aimed at beginners and price-conscious players tempted by the new influx of imported instruments.

With its 24" scale the Mustang has a nice easy tension, and the slightly shorter reach is good for smaller hands. The Jazzmaster-ish looking vibrato bridge assembly has a better break angle and works more reliably than the Jazzmaster. The dual Mustang pickups are both slanted for better treble response and feature on/off and phase switching for each pickup. The Mustang neck pickup is not as glassy at the typical Strat and has a slightly more mellow tone with less scoop. And thankfully the bridge is less edgy and brittle than most Strats. It's definitely the "Fender" sound but possibly more rhythm oriented and less of a screaming lead machine. Regardless of what you do with it, the fretwork, finish and overall build quality is exceptional and typical of Japanese Fenders of the era.

The Mustang captures the style and sound of 60s rock and roll. It's a great value for collectors and players, especially those of smaller stature.
