Up for sale is a vintage Tokai TE-70WR Breezysound Telecaster, made in Japan, likely from around 1981.
This is a very attractive and increasingly hard-to-find early Japanese Tokai Breezysound model, finished in a beautiful see-through wine red / transparent red finish. The grain of the body is clearly visible through the finish, giving this guitar a very classy vintage look.
One of the biggest highlights of this guitar is the body construction. The body appears to be a one-piece Sen solid body, which is quite rare and highly desirable among Japanese vintage guitar fans. Combined with the double-bound Telecaster-style body and the transparent red finish, this is a much more special-looking example than a standard solid-color Breezysound.
Another nice point is the weight. At approximately 3.56 kg / 7.85 lbs, it has a comfortable and well-balanced feel for a double-bound Telecaster-style guitar. The body is lively and resonant, with the clear, snappy attack expected from a Tele-style instrument, while the Sen body gives it a very appealing vintage Japanese character.
The front pickup is the original Tokai pickup. The bridge pickup has been replaced with a pickup from a 1990s Fender USA American Telecaster. This gives the guitar a very practical and usable Telecaster sound, with a strong and clear bridge tone while still keeping much of the original Tokai character.
The guitar also retains many Tokai-stamped parts, including the bridge plate and tuning machines, which is a very nice point for collectors and players who appreciate early Japanese Tokai instruments. The serial number is 1018361, which places it around the early 1980s Tokai production period.
The neck has a comfortable vintage-style feel, with a 43 mm nut width and a 64.5 cm / 25.4" scale length. The frets remain in excellent condition, with more than 90% fret life remaining. The neck and frets have been adjusted, and the guitar is ready to play.
Please note that this guitar is not fully original. The bridge pickup has been replaced with a 1990s Fender USA American Telecaster pickup, the pickguard has been replaced with a Fender Japan Telecaster pickguard, and the tone pot has been replaced. Because of the replaced tone pot, one of the control knobs sits slightly higher than normal, but this does not affect playability or function. The headstock logo has also had some minor color touch-up / correction.
Cosmetically, the guitar shows small scratches, small dings, and general signs of use appropriate for a vintage instrument. There are small marks on the body, but overall it presents very well, especially with the transparent red finish and visible Sen grain. Please check all photos carefully for the detailed condition.
The original period hard case is included. The case shows age and wear, and some of the metal hardware is partially damaged, but it is still usable.
Overall, this is a very cool and rare Tokai TE-70WR Breezysound with a beautiful see-through red finish, one-piece Sen body, original front pickup, Tokai-stamped hardware, excellent fret condition, and a very usable Fender USA bridge pickup upgrade. A great piece for players and collectors looking for something more special than a standard MIJ Telecaster-style guitar.
