Paul Reed Smith chose the specific scale length of 24.594 inches for the McCarty 594 family as a deliberate reference to the dimensions of late-1950s Gibson Les Paul production — a scale length in that era that produced a specific feel, string tension, and tonal character that players have been pursuing for six decades. The McCarty 594 is PRS's most focused attempt to capture that target, and the S2 version brings the core specification — that scale length, the Pattern Vintage neck profile, the 58/15 S pickups, the push/pull coil-tap wiring — to a more accessible price point while keeping all the decisions that matter made the same way.

The 58/15 "S" pickups are low-turn humbuckers designed using PRS's TCI (Tuned Capacitance and Inductance) process — voiced to capture the sweetness of vintage single coils and the warmth of late-1950s humbuckers in a single design that reads as neither but combines the best of both. Reading 8.61k bridge and 8.19k neck, these are in the range for the vintage-warm, clear, and dynamically open character that low-output humbuckers in this tradition produce. The push/pull tone controls unlock coil-splitting on both pickups, expanding the available tonal range from full humbucking to single-coil clarity in any combination The result is a genuinely versatile instrument that does not sacrifice core tone for versatility.

The Pattern Vintage neck profile is PRS's asymmetrical carve that fills the hand differently from side to side — slightly fuller on the bass side, slightly slimmer on the treble side — which many players describe as the most natural and fatigue-free neck shape in the PRS catalog. At .898" at the first fret and .987" at the twelfth it sits in the comfortable medium range. The slightly thicker mahogany back compared to standard S2 production is a deliberate tonal decision — more body mass, more sustain, the fuller acoustic character that denser construction contributes. Maple top, mahogany back and neck, rosewood fingerboard with faux bone binding and bird inlays, PRS two-piece bridge with brass saddles and steel studs, vintage-style tuners with wing buttons. Action set at 2/32" on both strings at the twelfth fret.

Near mint condition with no perceptible fretwear and one blemish on the bridge pickup cover, visible in photos. At 7 lbs 14.5 oz this is a well-balanced instrument.
