Outputs, each phase-shifted by 90 degrees, deliver filtered audio with slope values of -6 dB, -12 dB, -18 dB and -24 dB. Cutoff frequency and resonance are voltage-controlled. When self-oscillating, the filter can be driven at the standard 1V per octave, making it suitable for use as a quadrature VCO. Low-frequency roll-off caused by high resonance values can be compensated for using the boost control. The resonance behaviour can be adjusted via a high-pass filter in the feedback path. Compared to a Moog cascade, the sound of the Discrete Core Ladder VCF is significantly rougher. Saturation effects result in a slightly booming sound. Tip: Be sure to try out filter FM patches!
The Discrete Core Ladder VCF has three signal inputs with dedicated volume controls. Levels above 8 Vpp result in saturation effects. The filter itself is equipped with cutoff frequency and resonance potentiometers. Additionally, there are three CV inputs plus an attenuator. Two channels influence the cutoff frequency. The third control voltage path is wired to the resonance parameter. There is also a 1V/octave input. When self-oscillating, the circuit can be played across a range of five octaves. The resonance behaviour can be adjusted using a three-position switch. More precisely, the control allows the cutoff point of a high-pass filter in the feedback path to be shifted. Bass roll-off caused by high resonance values can be compensated for using the boost control. Four outputs with different slope and phase settings are available for tapping filtered audio material, specifically:
* -6 dB slope per octave, 0-degree phase shift
* -12 dB slope per octave, 90-degree phase shift
* -18 dB slope per octave, 180-degree phase shift
* -24 dB slope per octave, 270-degree phase shift
