In 1967, the Beatles released “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” one of the most influential albums in music history. This iconic Höfner violin bass—the primary instrument of Beatles singer and bassist Paul McCartney—dates from the same year.
It is thanks to him that the 500/1 is likely the only instrument manufactured in Germany to have achieved such significance in rock and pop history.
This Höfner (or Hofner, for export) does not yet have a serial number. However, based on various details, it can be clearly dated to 1967:
The raised plastic logo, which was only used until 1967. The Type 512B Blade pickups without a notch in the metal strip. And last but not least, the stamped number combination behind the resistance value on the back of the pots. According to this, this 500/1 was manufactured in the 17th week of 1967. So, a fairly early '67 model, which is also equipped with the characteristic “Teacup” pot knobs.
The “hollowbody” style body features a spruce top. The back and sides are made of flamed maple.
Maple neck with a bound rosewood fingerboard and dot inlays.
The aforementioned 512B Blade pickups handle the signal conversion. They are controlled via the narrow, rectangular control panel with two volume pots and three switches: Solo/Rhythm, Bass On, Treble On.
Weight: Just 2.2 kg.
The bass comes in its original hard case, which naturally shows some signs of storage but still functions perfectly and protects the instrument safely during transport.
Of course, time has not left this nearly 60-year-old instrument entirely unscathed. It has the typical patina all over, as well as some normal signs of wear, which are clearly visible in the photos. Structurally, everything is in good condition. The frets show only minimal wear, the neck is solid and does not require a reset, as is sometimes the case with the 500/1. And, of course, all mechanical and electronic components function exactly as they should.
The previous owner was apparently a big Beatles/McCartney fan. Like his musical idol, he removed the pickguard and attached a “Bassman” sticker. Unfortunately, the pickguard has been lost over the decades. However, the small sticker is included.
P.S.: Preferably for pickup in 59457 Werl, Germany (near Dortmund, Soest, Unna, Hamm). Shipping of this delicate and vintage instrument only by prior arrangement.
