1966 Vintage Gibson ES-335 TDC - Sparkling Burgundy - Custom Color

Since its debut in 1958, the Gibson ES-335 has stood as one of the most consequential designs in electric guitar history, striking a versatile balance between hollowbody warmth and solidbody focus. By the mid-1960s, the model had taken on a more refined look and feel, and guitars from this era capture both the elegance and the transitional quirks of Gibson’s golden age in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

This 1966 ES-335TD, finished in rare Sparkling Burgundy, is a stunning example of that period. Its laminated maple body with solid maple center block delivers resonance and sustain without the feedback concern of a fully hollow guitar. One-Piece Mahogany Neck with Rosewood Fingerboard and Pearl Block Inlays reflect Gibson’s mid-’60s move toward a more upscale aesthetic. The trapeze tailpiece, another hallmark of the era, and the early 60’s Gibson Tophat Reflector Knobs contribute both stylistic flair and a touch of slinkiness to the playing response.

Turning 50 years old in 2026, this 1966 ES-335 TDC is in impressive cosmetic condition. Shows finish-checking and slight wear and tear from the years, but no structural damage. Both pickups are replacements, the neck pickup is a Gibson Tim Shaw PAF (silver "pat Appl For" sticker), with a great reputation as being close to an original PAF. The bridge pickup is a Dimarzio. Both picks work and sound well together. There is an extra “switch” hole below the pick guard. Comes with the Original Gibson hardshell case.

Key Features and Details:

  • Finish Evolution: Sparkling Burgundy was a "custom color" for Gibson, typically starting as a deep metallic red that often fades or "oxidizes" into a gold or copper shade over time due to the yellowing of the nitrocellulose lacquer. This guitar shows only minimal fading the front.
  • Construction: Laminated maple body with a solid maple center block to reduce feedback at high volumes.
  • Fretboard: High-end example from this period, including a rosewood fingerboard with block inlays. A 1-9/16" nut width, with a comfortable neck profile.
  • Hardware: Features a transitional mix of nickel and chrome hardware with a trapeze tailpiece. Gibson Tophat Reflector Knobs.
  • Pickups: Replace pickups; neck is a Gibson Tim Shaw PAF, the bridge is a Dimarzio.
  • Scarcity: Sparkling Burgundy is a very rare finish. Gibson only offered for three years 1966-1968.While most 335s from this era were finished in Sunburst or Cherry, the Sparkling Burgundy finish was Gibson's answer to Fender's metallic custom colors, featuring a deep metallic red achieved with a gold undercoat.
