The classic treble booster is a deceptively simple circuit that transforms an amp on the edge of breakup—tightening the low end, pushing the upper mids forward, and unlocking the harmonic richness and touch-sensitive sustain that shaped some of guitar's most influential sounds. So why not build one in the housing of a vintage answering machine?

This unique one-off from R2R Electric (aka DJ Lava Lamp) was hand built in Los Angeles in 2020. It is an absolutely ripping treble booster built from all NOS components into the housing of a 1960s TelTape answering machine—complete with reel to reel and case! Based on the classic amp-top treble booster circuits, the TelTape features a NOS Phillips OC70 germanium transistor, which produces a warmer, smoother, and more organic overdrive sound. Simple controls—on/off, level knob, and additional boost switch. Again, why not build it in an old answering machine?

This TelTape Treble Booster shows some scuffs and signs of use. There is a crack to the plastic housing that runs past the output jack. Apparently that was there since it has been a pedal and not an answering machine. The carrying case is in excellent shape, and taking the pedal out of the little briefcase might be as much fun as plugging it in. The original indicator bulb is your LED—how cool is that?
