The Ibanez JP20 Brown Sunburst 1990 (Joe Pass Signature) is a full-hollow electric guitar released by Ibanez in 1982 as a signature model for American jazz guitarist Joe Pass. Initially manufactured by Fujigen, production shifted to Terada Musical Instruments around 1986.
This particular guitar is a 1990 model from the Terada manufacturing period. It weighs 2.9kg. It features a full-size single-cutaway full-hollow body construction, an arched spruce top (with f-holes), and a maple back and sides (with multi-binding). The neck is a 3-piece maple set-neck joint, and the 22-fret ebony fingerboard with binding is adorned with pearl and abalone split-block position markers.
Other features include gold "Ibanez Super 58" humbuckers, a height-adjustable ebony bridge and tailpiece, a bone nut, a tortoiseshell pickguard, "Sure Grip" knobs, and pearloid button "VelveTune" tuners.
This model has had different parts depending on the year; in late 1982, it was fitted with "Sure Grip II" knobs, and in 1983, the strap pins were changed from the standard type to the V-shaped "Dead End" type. In 1985, "Smooth Tuner II" tuners were adopted, and in 1987, the strap pins were changed back to the standard type. The final change was in 1988, when the tuners were changed to "Gotoh SG38".
This particular model has had its tuners replaced and is now a gold-colored Gotoh tuner. (Original parts are included, but their functionality is unconfirmed.)
Based on a 16-inch D'Aquisto archtop owned by Joe, this guitar features a 25.5-inch scale and 22-fret fingerboard, unlike typical jazz guitars, to suit his fingerstyle playing. This results in the pickups being positioned closer to the bridge than on a typical jazz guitar, giving it a harder sound.
The serial number also uses a unique system; "J" stands for Joe, the first and last digits represent the year of manufacture, and the four digits in between indicate the production order for that year. After the transition to Terada Musical Instruments, a different system was used, starting with "H," followed by the year and the next five digits representing the serial number.
Ibanez is a manufacturer strong in hollow models such as semi-acoustic guitars. Made in Japan, so you can be assured of its quality. Although this model ceased production in 1990, it has many devoted fans, and its looks and playability are outstanding, making it highly recommended as a first full-acoustic guitar!
