There's something deeply satisfying about a fuzz pedal that doesn't overthink itself — and the Summer School Electronics Fuzz 101 is exactly that kind of box. It takes the warm, splattery soul of a classic two-transistor fuzz face circuit and gives it just enough modern muscle to keep things interesting.

At its core, this is a germanium-or-silicon-adjacent fuzz face topology doing what fuzz face circuits do best: blooming sustain, that slightly saggy touch sensitivity, and a woolly low-end that feels almost alive under your fingers. But Summer School didn't stop at a straight clone. They've bolted on a RAT-style tone stack, which is a genuinely smart move. Where a traditional fuzz face leaves your tone control options pretty limited, the RAT-style filter here lets you carve from a thick, almost synth-like wall of low-mids all the way up to a biting, nasal edge that can get downright nasty. It's a wider tonal range than you'd expect from something this simple-looking.

Then there's the bias control — and this is where it gets fun. Starving the transistors shifts the whole character of the circuit. Back it off and you get that sputtery, velcro-tearing stutter that players like Hendrix and Gilmour stumbled into by accident with dying batteries. Crank it up and the fuzz tightens, sustains longer, and gets more aggressive. It's essentially a whole second personality hiding behind a single knob.

The Fuzz 101 is the kind of pedal that rewards players who like to dig in and explore rather than just set-and-forget. It cleans up beautifully with your guitar's volume knob, stacks interestingly with overdrives, and has enough character to hold its own as a lead tone or a full-band rhythm texture. Whether you're chasing vintage psych-rock warmth or something uglier and more modern, this thing has range.

It's the kind of fuzz that makes you play longer than you meant to.
