The CEM3320 is a classic analog voltage-controlled filter (VCF) integrated circuit developed by Curtis Electromusic in the late 1970s, widely used in vintage synthesizers for its flexible and musical filter response. It is a 4-pole (24 dB/octave) filter design capable of low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass configurations depending on how it is implemented in a circuit, making it one of the more versatile filter chips of its era.
Unlike fixed-function filters, the CEM3320 is essentially a set of filter building blocks that designers can configure in different ways, which is why it appears in a wide range of classic synths such as Sequential, Oberheim, and others. It features voltage-controlled cutoff and resonance (Q), allowing dynamic modulation that defines much of the classic analog synth sound.
