The Acoustic Research (AR) M3 Holographic Imaging speakers, popular in the 1990s, are 3-way, acoustic suspension speakers known for a 3D soundstage and precise, "holographic" imaging. As part of the Holographic Imaging series, they were designed for accurate, smooth, in-room frequency response rather than just on-axis, often creating a realistic, immersive sound with impressive bass for their size. Despite their unusual (some might say ugly?) appearance, they are a really distinctive set of speakers, visually and aurally.
Cosmetic Condition: These speakers are in Very Good condition, with just little signs of age/wear and a small corner blemish on one of the speaker grilles (see pic).
- Offset and Angled Drivers: Midrange and bass drivers were often tilted or offset to manipulate room reflections, enhancing the sense of space and instrument placement
- Cabinet Geometry: The cabinets were designed to reduce internal resonances and constructive interference, often resulting in unique, non-rectangular shapes
- Directivity Control: The series aimed for smooth in-room frequency response rather than just flat performance in anechoic chambers
- Driver Configuration: 8" woofer + 2.5" dome midrange + tweeter
Service History: No service records were included from the prior owner. Here at the shop we did routine testing, cleaning and inspection.
Cosmetic Condition: Overall we rated this at Very Good.
