Up for sale is a mystery of a guitar! In theory, it’s a 1981 Martin D-35 prototype with D-41 appointments. Spruce top, Andean rosewood back and sides, with 1/4” scalloped braces. Various stamps in the soundhole reference the year of production as well as “Mike Longworth Prototype” across the truss rod opening. Martin did not start adding adjustable truss rods to their guitars until 1985. After further contact with Martin customer service, they do not claim affiliation with the instrument. There is no official Martin style stencil on the headstock, which leads me to believe it is likely a “lawsuit”-era acoustic. It has a replacement bone nut and saddle, with plenty of room to take off, as well as black Schaller tuners from the period. The guitar sounds fantastic, as you would expect a Martin-style dreadnought to! Pronounced bass, clear highs and a noticeable scooped midrange. It is in fairly good shape, other than a ding close to the pickguard (see images). It comes with a brand new hardshell case. Local pickup only-offers welcome! Please note-knowing that this is more than likely an import and not an authentic Martin, I would prefer buyers try before purchase and make up their own minds.
