I collect silver-face Pioneers. That said, I can’t help myself sometimes—when I come across something like this, a rather rare bird—a 4-track Revox A77—I grab it. But it’s not one of those Pioneers, so… being sold.

And honestly, pieces like this are why. The A77 isn’t just another tape deck - it’s one of those machines that helped define what “serious” home and semi-pro recording looked like in its era. Built by Studer under the Revox name, it sits right at that intersection of Swiss engineering and practical usability. These weren’t toys; they were workhorses -- found in studios, broadcast environments, and in the hands of people who cared about sound before “audiophile” became a marketing term.

This one, being a 4-track variant, runs at 7 1/2 and 3 3/4 ips—making it a versatile deck for both playback and recording without chewing through tape at high speed.

As with anything I keep around, it went through the usual process: fully checked over and brought up to spec so it’s ready to go for the long haul. Nearly $700 was put into professional refurbishment, including:

  • Power supply
  • Capstan driver
  • Driver circuit
  • Solenoid driver
  • Playback pre-amp circuit

The tech also calibrated and lubricated the deck. No end-of-tape issues.

(I have not tested the speaker outputs, but there’s no indication the amp wouldn’t function as expected.)

Cosmetically, it presents extremely well. There’s a small chip at the back upper right corner, but it’s covered when a reel is mounted—see pictures.

And unlike a lot of listings, this one actually comes ready to use. I never understood why sellers strip these down and make you chase basic parts. Included:

  • Original Revox cover (new)
  • Original Revox take-up reel
  • Revox-branded NAB hubs
  • One (1) original Revox plastic reel with pre-recorded tape
  • Original paper manual

See pictures and video for a full look and demo—they’re part of the description and worth the proverbial 1000 words. I had an iPod hooked up to the inputs - so, you can hear the 'source' (jumping to the 21st century...:-)).

[Normally, the VU meters are not active in playback. However, if you select I>II and II>I on the Level switches and bring them up to around 9, the VU meters will show activity—that’s what you’re seeing in the video.]

Perhaps you can find it listed elsewhere for less (and I have seen them go for MORE) - but, in my case, you would be getting a thoroughly checked-out and refreshed unit with no stories.
I don't buy items to flip - it's not a source of income for me (especially when you consider the fees), no matter what IRS would like to think. These are "rescues", something I enjoy doing.

NOTE: IRS now requires sellers to pay taxes - which means that the prices are going UP.
I am selling at cost, give or take.

It will go out well packed and fully insured through either Reverb Safe Shipping or UPS Ground - given the weight, it's not cheap but is WELL WORTH the surety it brings. I have shipped aplenty (and had many shipped to me - so I know what NOT to do). So - this is going to be a sizeable package when all is said and done - I am not making money on shipping.

A standard disclaimer: While the unit is fully operational to the best of my knowledge, it is being sold "as-described" because some folks here and on other platforms harbor peculiar misapprehensions about how a 40-50 year old piece of vintage electronics should look and function.
