Franciso Pau 1890 Classical Guitar - A tonal contemporary document full of lightness, elegance and historical magic
Sometimes you hold an instrument in your hands that is more than just wood, strings and craftsmanship. The Franciso Pau 1890 Classical Guitar is just such a rare piece - a guitar that comes directly from the golden era of Spanish guitar making and whose sound brings to life a time when the modern concert guitar was just finding its form.
This guitar has no label and cannot be clearly assigned to a luthier. The style of construction makes this guitar clearly a guitar from Valencia from the period 1880 - 1900. Furthermore, with the help of experts, we were able to attribute the guitar to the maker Francisco Pau. The outstanding construction, the high-quality materials used, the elaborate decorations and the excellent sound allow this attribution.
The Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar was made in Valencia, one of the most important regions for historic guitar making. Francisco Pau came from a family of guitar makers and carried on his father's workshop with great dedication. He also honed his skills with A. Hernández Carbonell, an outstanding master of his time. The result is instruments that are among the best of their era in terms of both craftsmanship and sound.
This Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar is an exceptional example of this tradition. With its finely crafted spruce top and delicate rosewood sides and back, it features a construction style that is strongly reminiscent of the instruments of Antonio de Torres, who was active at the same time. Particularly noteworthy is the elaborate top bracing, which gives the instrument stability and at the same time an extraordinary openness of sound.
The Franciso Pau 1890 Classical Guitar reveals its unmistakable character from the very first note. It is extremely lightly built and responds immediately to every touch. The sound is clear, woody and rich in overtones - exactly that „old“ sound that is so appreciated in historical instruments. The trebles are fine and brilliant, the basses warm and sustaining, while the overall sound has an impressive balance and depth.
What makes this Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar special is its expressiveness. It follows every nuance in the playing, no matter how small, and enables exceptionally differentiated dynamics. The sound is lively, almost breathing - from the lowest to the highest registers, it always remains clear, elegant and fascinating. It is impressive how much sonority and musical substance this instrument still offers after more than 130 years.
With a scale length of 605 mm and a nut width of 49 mm, the Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar sits comfortably in the hand and is effortless to play. The string action is well adjusted (3.3 mm on the low E-string and 2.8 mm on the high E-string at the 12th fret), and the bridge inlay still offers scope for future adjustments.
The machine heads are fine tuning pegs from Wittner and the guitar can be tuned comfortably and precisely.
The Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar is in restored and fully playable condition. It has been repaired with great care to ensure its stability while fully preserving its historical character.
This Franciso Pau 1890 classical guitar is more than just an instrument - it is a resounding piece of history. It offers the rare opportunity to experience the authentic sound of the late 19th century and to reproduce the music of this period with a depth and authenticity that modern instruments can hardly achieve. An extraordinary and inspiring masterpiece for collectors and musicians alike.
