The Black Lion Audio Seventeen is the company’s version of the classic ’76 limiting amplifier. More specifically, it’s their idea of what the ’76 could have been had it been created with the technology of today. The Seventeen FET Limiting Amplifier features an improved and redesigned IC-based front end, which is combined with BLA’s custom-designed output transformer. This combination results in a clean and modern sound when the Seventeen is lightly compressed, a harmonically rich vintage character when more heavily driven, and a ton of low end that perfectly complements its open high end. The Seventeen also features Black Lion Audio’s proprietary power decoupling for an incredibly low noise floor, and its high-grade Nichicon signal capacitors are considered among the best quality capacitors currently available. Overall, Sweetwater studio engineers are greatly impressed by the Seventeen’s level of detail, character, and versatility.
Black Lion Audio first gained notoriety by offering custom mods to classic studio gear, so thinking outside the box is par for the course. That’s why many of the Seventeen’s standard features would be considered “hot-rodded” if found on other hardware compressors. These features include a frequency-adjustable sidechain, separate selectable HPF/LPF, and a dry/wet mix knob for onboard New York/parallel compression. Seventeen also includes stereo link functionality for linking two units together. Just like its inspirational ancestor, the BLA Seventeen FET Limiting Amplifier is sure to find its way onto many drum, bass, and vocal tracks … and beyond. Sweetwater tip: Unlike the original, the Black Lion Audio Seventeen yields faster attack times when turned to the left, and slower attack times when turned to the right. Seriously: at this price, why not get two?!
Black Lion Audio: the mod squad
Founded in Chicago in 2006, Black Lion Audio has made its mark on the audio industry by hot rodding audio equipment and upgrading the sound quality of popular music production gear, elevating industry-standard products to new levels of sonic quality. Though the company started off modding gear from other manufacturers, the staff's cumulative expertise has resulted in a distinct line of boutique mic preamps and word clocks. BLA gear and modded gear can be found in studios from Los Angeles to New York to Nashville and heard on projects from artists like Maroon 5, Alison Krauss, Metallica, T-Pain, George Strait, MGMT, Beyoncé, George Duke, Slayer, Erykah Badu, Rod Stewart, and more.
