Valco Supro 1696TN circa 1962. Open-back combo amp with 1 x 15" speaker. Excellent condition—all controls and functions work as designed. One tear in Tolex front bottom left—see photo.

Features:

  • Split chassis (preamp top, power amp bottom) makes amp size more compact
  • Power amp: 2 x 6L6GC class AB hot cathode bias ~28 watts
  • Preamp: 2 x 12ax7a
  • Phase inverter: 12ax7a (cathodyne)
  • Rectifier: 5AR4/GZ34 (replaced 5U4)
  • Bias-vary tremolo—the best tremolo I've ever heard!
  • Two channels, each with two input jacks, one volume control and one tone control. Channel 1 has Bass/Treble switch. Channel 2 has Accordion/Guitar (impedance) switch, tremolo Speed and Intensity control pots, and tremolo footswitch jack.
  • Pilot light and On/Off/Standby switch (standby is mute-only.)

I lovingly restored, maintained, gigged, recorded and rehearsed with this sweet amp for the last 25 years.
It is original and unmodified, except as follows:

  • Original speaker (Jensen P15N) previously damaged beyond repair. Replaced with a new reissue Jensen C15N
  • Output transformer moved from the original speaker frame to the power amp chassis
  • Power supply rebuilt: original 5U4 rectifier tube replaced with 5AR4/GZ34
  • Electrolytic caps, high-power resistors and tubes replaced as necessary (detailed service records available)
  • Missing Supro logo badge replaced.

At gig volume with drums, amp is clean and noise-free, with even-order harmonics bloom and gradual transition to overdrive and odd-order harmonics as volume increases to loud crunch at full. Works very well with effects pedals. Dimensions: 20 3⁄4"W x 18"H x 8 1⁄2"D Weight: 37 lbs
