Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a unique, obscure and high quality 1980's era Realistic "Highball" model dynamic cardioid microphone with an all metal body and polished chrome grill that closely resembled the classic American made Shure SM-58 model mic from that era. This mic comes with a Shure A-25 mic clip and new Auray exterior black foam pop filter.

This microphone was one of the very best that Realistic sold. It was a collaboration between Radio Shack and Shure Brothers. The Highball actually uses the same cartridge as the Shure SM-58 so what you're getting here is the American made Shure SM58 that was just rebadges as a Realistic / Radio Shack mic. The tone and response on this mic is just as good as the original and it's quite strong. No difference. You'll see the element in pic # 12.

That being said this Highball is set to Low Z. The mic itself dual Z but was wired internally to be Low Z. The SM59 and High ball is usually Low Z unless wired on the inside to be Hi Z which I have seen many times over the years. If you use a standard XLR cable with this mic you'll be just fine. You'll only have issues with a standard XLR cable if the the mic is wired to Hi Z. Again, this is a Low Z mic.

It works perfectly and can be used for recording, singing or general broadcasting purposes as it was designed. It's uni-directional in nature so it's polar pattern tends to pick up very little background noise.

Despite being a Low Z set up It sounds like it's a 150 OHMS. Possibly 200 OHMS. The Shure SM58 in Low Z is 600 OHMS I believe which is very bass heavy. This mic is not bass heavy but more midrange in nature. A warm, smooth, brighter tone that you'll really appreciate. The on / off switch on the mic works perfectly.

This mic was made in America. I don't know how many years Radio Shack sold the Highball in this particular model but it wasn't many. Maybe 5 or 10 years tops. It would have been one of their finest models and on the expensive side. It's built like a tank.

This microphone has a classic mid century, modern design and is quite handsome despite the heavier wear here and there. It comes with the original painted handle that's the same color as the Shure SM58. The handle has scratches, scuff marks, lite discoloration and small paint chips. The mic has been thoroughly cleaned as have the XLR pins. The inner foam under the chrome globe was replaced as was the foam on the inner element as the original foam was all but gone.

I'm including the new Auray brand exterior black foam poop filter that fits the mic like a glove. It looks great as well and really helps with sound characteristics. You don't need to use it all the time but it's there just in case. You can really get in on this mic too. No issues.

 I'd rate the mic a true 6 on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking. A true 10 sound wise.

The mic comes with the older Shure A-25 mic clip that has a bit of wear as well but works perfectly. It grips the mic firmly and will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have.

Again, mic takes a standard XLR cable. This mic is ready to go.

If you want an American made SM58 that's a slightly exotic and few people have or know of...the Highball will do the trick. Cheers!
