Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very unique 1950's era General Electric 97U29 model controlled magnetic microphone based on the more common Shure Brothers 510C model "Hercules". This 97U29 comes with an original Shure S-36 model desk stand. This mic was originally sold for dispatch basic communication purposes. Excellent HAM radio operators but it should be noted that the mic has been tested and no longer works. The element is missing from inside so this should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only but will make a very nice display piece anywhere it sits.
Pic # 2 is from an old Shure catalog showing this very model mic and it's basic characteristics. The General Electric 97U29 was a very popular model for hospitals, schools, police stations, etc...
The 97U29 was a mic sold under license from Shure Brothers and this was done pretty often throughout the microphone industry. Both Shure Brothers and Electro Voice sold a tone of different makes and models for about a dozen or so different companies from the 1930's to about the late 1970's.
This set up had a very sleek and modern look for it's time being rugged and reliable as well. This example does show a bit of wear but not too shabby either.
This General Electric 97U29 model came in it's own distinct blue grey / paint scheme and General Electric badge and insignia. Otherwise the all metal body was identical to the Shure model sold. The painted body on this mic shows lite wear and one of the nicer I have seen though the matching stand does show a bit more wear.
This little mic has a bit of weight to it being an all metal construction. The original dark violet colored cloth screen has zero rips or odors and no discoloration. It's appx 4 inches tall X 2 1/2 inches wide. With the stand it's appx 10 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep. The GE badge and logo are still present and look great. Please let the detailed pics be your guide.
The S-36 desk stand has the 5 inch steel riser which the mic seats on and allows for the cable to run down through. The stand has typical wear but free of any dents and still has the original push to talk mechanism on the front of the stand. The rubber pads were replaced with felt pads. The S-36 makes a very stable platform for the mic making it very hard to tip over.
You'll see that the mic is still properly wired and has the short 10 inch cable with a vintage Cannon female XLR end connector. that's in very nice shape.
The 97U29 is an easy 7 on a scale of 1 - 10.
Again, this is going to be a very fun mic to display in the home, studio or office.
And as always...
