Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a very unique and very rare Shure Brother's 708A model crystal microphone variant sold as the MEG M-14 model during the 1940's or early 50's. This particular model utilized the exact same "Zeppelin" design as the Shure 708A. This mic comes with the period 1940's era Shure S-36 model desk stand shown in which to display and a cable to operate.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in a 1940's Shure Brother catalog and it's basic characteristics.
Again, the 708A design was based on the very popular German Zeppelin's being flown around the world at that time. You can see that in the deco styling.
This is honestly the first MEG M-14 model I have ever seen so not many of these were sold over the years. It was a very limited run and I don't even know who MEG is? Possibly a Japanese brand or American who sold the 708A under contract?
This very unique variant of the 708A has a gorgeous salmon hammered paint scheme with chrome accents and a very nice riveted gloss black emblem / label. As you can see the mic itself shows just lite wear just a few lite scratches as well as scuff marks here. Just a couple tiny paint chips but the good news is that the front grill is free of any dents. The joint mechanism has lots of tension so you can get just the right angle needed. The chrome lower pistol grip looks very nice. It also has a unique Amphenol cable connector that is 100% stock / original but I've never seen the 708A with that style of connection.
The mic also comes with an original dark grey screen that's in very nice shape. If you put a flashlight up to the screen in a darker room you can see through it and see the original crystal element inside.
The mic has been tested and has a very strong signal for an old crystal element. But you know how these sound if you're familiar with a crystal mic. it's not a studio mic by any means but can certainly be used.
These mics can be altered to have a better sounding tone but because of the rarity of this model I would simply leave it be as you would not want to ruin the authenticity of it.
The threads for both the stand and cable are excellent. Nothing stripped. If you demand ultra rare and highly collectible...this one won't disappoint.
There is an old 5 foot cable that's included. It's in great shape and works perfectly. It's soft, pliable and comes with the male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment and all guitar amps.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE...
The stand is a 1940's era Shure Brothers S-36 model microphone desk stand that's in very nice condition and was the Chicago model so it would have been made somewhere between 1940 and 1956. The S-36 was the most common desk stand sold by Shure from the late 1930's to 1960 and could be used with almost all Shure model microphones utilizing the lower pistol grip. It comes with the 3 inch riser as well so any screw on mic or mic clip will work with this stand.
The S-36 is a lite weight design with a low center of gravity. A classic deco look that really compliments any Shure mic you mount on top and will provide a beautiful, stable platform in which to use or display the Webster mic.
The S-36 was an all aluminum body being virtually corrosion proof and comes with a dark silver painted finish.
The stand has the original Shure insignia as well as the brass bolt and cable clamp. The 5 felt pads are new and in great shape.
The S-36 stand has extremely lite wear as seen in the pics provided. Zero dents or corrosion. I'd rate the true condition a 9 on a scale of 1 - 10.
This S-36 is appx 3 inches tall X 5 inches wide X 7 inches deep. With the mic on top it's appx 12 inches tall when raised completely upright.
The mic with it's industrial, deco look is quite stunning on this stand and will look amazing anywhere it sits in the home, office or studio. An instant conversation piece.
