Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a high quality and highly desirable Electro Voice 655C dynamic microphone made in 1982 as shown on the serial number. Made in Buchanan, Michigan. It comes with the E.V clip, suede mic cover and the period Atlas DS-2 desk stand shown. If you are looking for a nice award to give to a singer or broadcaster then you might want to consider this example. It's a very nice looking non-working 655C that will be great for prop, display or repair use. It's 100% complete inside and out but the dynamic cardioid element is dead.
Pic # 2 shows this very 1st generation 655C model in an old E.V catalog. The catalog is not included however. You can always make a copy of this on your printer of course. You'll notice the 1st generation 655C had the rounded front grill / screen but E.V changed that front grill around 1960 to have a flatter surface like this mic this being sold.
The 655C was actually one of the longest selling mics made by E.V and is a studio quality mic with excellent tone and a great frequency response but it was a very expensive model in the E.V line up so limited quantities were sold each year making this a harder to come by mic just as the E.V 666. The mic was first introduced in the early 1950's I believe and E.V finally phased the mic out around 1990. A solid 40 year run.
Pic # 3 shows the Beatles using this very model while recording live in concert sometime in the early 1960's.
The 655C was a very lite weight, all metal design with a painted olive drab green body that reduced unwanted light glare than many of the early chrome mics put off under bright lights. The mic is appx 10 1/2 inches long X 1 inch wide.
This microphone had omni-directional characteristics and could be set at either 50, 150 or 250 OHMS depending on the users needs. It takes the unique Cannon UA-3-11 style cable though none is provided. You can see that the physical finish is very nice with just a few tiny scratches and scuff marks. Zero dents or fractures.
The painted metal mesh screen is very nice too with zero tarnish, odors or deformation. The XLR pins on this mic have been cleaned ensuring a perfect signal with zero distortion once the cable is attached if the mic is ever repaired. If you have an old beat up 655C that works great then an element swap takes about 10 to 15 minutes. It's a very easy swap. This mic will make an ideal candidate.
The 655C also comes with the original E.V model mic clip that is in excellent condition and works great for this microphone giving the user a wide degree of tilt up and down as needed. The clip grips the mic firmly via two screws and will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have as well. It shows no cosmetic wear. The clip alone is an easy $60.00 item. The original brown suede mic cover slips over the mic to protect it while not in use. The mic cover is in very nice condition and one of the nicest I have ever seen.
The older mic stand is included as well and will do a great job of displaying the mic. This stand is an Atlas DS-2 model and makes for a very stable platform despite being very lite weight. The base is a bakelite design. Very mid century and in excellent condition. No scratches or chips. The chrome riser looks just as nice and is 3 inches tall. Total dimensions with the mic on top is 15 inches tall (with mic raised up completely) X 5 inches wide.
Overall this mic is physically a true 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10 though many would rate much higher. This 655C will certainly draw attention anywhere it's displayed in the home, office or studio. Far cheaper than a working example as a working model this nice can fetch upwards of $500.00.
