Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a hard to come by older Astatic crystal microphone that resembles the more common 10-c model mic. This is the early 1940's era N-80S with the built in lower adapter and on / off switch.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old 1940's era Astatic catalog I have along with it's basic characteristics. The N-80 & N-80S were entry level mics that were used primarily for dispatch and other basic communications. It has a very elegant design and was so popular that Astatic built this as the 10C well into the 1970's I believe. This N-80S was only built and sold for a short time. Possibly 5 years? You just don't hardly ever see these around.
The N-80S is an all metal. lite weight design that actually makes an excellent harp mic but it should be noted that the original crystal element in this mic is only about 30% strength. This would be a great candidate for a Shure C.M or C.R dynamic element as it would fit inside very nicely. I'll let the next owner decide if a mod is the right choice.
As you can see the mic itself is in very good original condition. The painted head shows just lite wear in the form of scratches and scuff marks on the original paint. The front chrome grill shows lite pitting but it's free of any dents. The inner black cloth / pop filter is very nice as well with zero rips or odors. The lower pistol grip is very nice as you can see and the joint mechanism has adjustable tension vis side screws. The on / off switch works perfectly as well.
This mic will screw onto any stand you have but an original Astatic E6G is included.
The stand shows a bit more wear but not much more. This model was a detachable desk stand that has a painted aluminum base with detachable painted wooden handle allowing the user of the mic to quickly release the mic attached and walk around using the handle to support the mic with the twist of the handle.
This design was very practical for it's time as very few people actually held those older mics in their hand. It was considered taboo to hold the mic in your hand back then so the mic stand handle was a more civilized and practical option.
The stands riser seats on the base via a small hole where the riser sits. There is plenty of tension once applied. Easy to remove once twisted half way and lifted upwards.
Often the top of the wood handle is stripped out from years of use making it hard for any mic to screw onto the handle but this handle is very good and seats the mic well.
The top wooden riser has the black painted finish and looks very nice while the bottom painted aluminum base shows the same amount of wear. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The stand has the original rubber pad and it's in excellent shape. Stand is appx 6 inches tall X 5 inches wide. With mic on top it's appx 11 inches tall.
