You want Octave Fuzz (think the sparkling leads on the studio version of "Purple Haze"), you also want regular fuzz, but you don't want yet another dirt pedal on your board? What's UPDOG?! Electra-Style Fuzz (one transistor) drives an insanely good Octave Fuzz. You can use a footswitch to lift out Octave, leaving you with thick saturated fuzz that cleans up beautifully when you roll off your guitar volume (like a Face-type Fuzz would). Best at the front of your signal chain, after Univibe if you're using one. Gated and gnarly when the octave is engaged. The octave-up section is inspired by Tim Escobedo's "push-me/pull-you" circuit topology if you want to be a nerd and chase down the schematic (and you'll notice plenty of over-spec "mojo" components on the perfboard). Or, you could just step on this pedal, play your guitar on the neck pickup above the 8th fret, and counjure Jimi's "One Rainy Wish", "Little Miss Lover" and of course "Purple Haze", all great examples of early Octave Fuzz.
