The Strymon Fairfax isn’t your typical drive pedal. It’s essentially a fully realized miniature tube amp circuit, recreated entirely in analog form and housed inside a pedal. Inspired by the rare Garnet Herzog unit from the mid-60s, Fairfax captures that raw, harmonically rich amp tone that defined a number of classic recordings, but in a format that’s far more practical for modern setups.

What makes it special is how convincingly it behaves like a real amplifier. The circuit recreates a tube preamp, Class A power section, and even the response of an output transformer, which is a huge part of what gives tube amps their feel. The result is a drive that responds naturally to your playing, retains the character of your guitar, and adds a sense of depth and cohesion that feels more like an amp than a pedal.

There’s a wide range of usable tones here. At lower gain settings, it works beautifully as a warm, articulate boost with added harmonic richness. Push it further, and it delivers thick, saturated drive that still stays musical and responsive. The Sag control is especially unique, letting you dial in everything from subtle compression to more aggressive, sputtery, almost fuzz-like textures when pushed to extremes.

Internally, Fairfax runs at a much higher voltage than standard pedals, giving it increased headroom and a more dynamic feel under your fingers. It pairs equally well with clean amps, already driven rigs, or even modelers, always adding that amp-like dimension that’s hard to replicate.

This is part of Strymon’s Series A line, focused purely on analog design. No digital processing, no extras, just a thoughtfully engineered circuit that delivers tone and feel at a high level.
